Choir started off small and consistent; students encouraged their friends to consider joining choir; East High announced their Musical: "The Music Man" and invited middle school students to audition for some of the roles!
By second quarter we added many students to choir! The 6th grade choir alone more than doubled!
We also had 12 of our students cast in various roles in East's production of "The Music Man".
Our first concert was a success! 6th Grade Choir sang: "Ding Dong Merrily on High" and "Voice From a Dream" while the 7th/8th Grade Combined Choir sang: "Feliz Navidad", "Baby it's Cold Outside", and "Music of the Night" from "Phantom of the Opera".
The 6th Graders also had the opportunity to sing carols during all lunches just before Winter Break.
The students in the Music Man gave up part of their break to attend more rehearsals!
December also brought the first of a series of 4 operas that we could go see at the local movie theatre, thanks to the Metropolitan Opera's MetLive in HD series! A couple students and I enjoyed a wonderful rendition of the comedy "Falstaff" set in the 1950s.
The first of the year set us off on a fast pace in preparation for several different programs.
At the end of January, the long awaited performances of "The Music Man" were finally here! It was a fantastic show where all students wowed the audience members with their incredible talents in musical theatre. I was proud to see so many of my students up there; and even more proud to see how they have developed as musicians in the classroom!
February is Black History Month-- and our school celebrated the rich heritage of many of our students with a family night. The choirs performed together on two numbers: "Lift Every Voice and Sing" (the Black National Anthem) and "It Don't Mean a Thing, If it Ain't Got that Swing" (an arrangement of the tune from Duke Ellington).
February was also the month of our 2nd MetLive in HD with "Rusalka"- the Czech version of the classic tale "The Little Mermaid". Additionally- the 8th grade Honor Choir took place, and 9 of our talented 8th graders were in attendance.
We are now in the throes of preparing for our Spring Concert in May. 6th grade is singing 3 numbers this time, of varying genres. The 7/8 Combined Choir is also singing a highly varied mix of songs.
6th Grade Songs: A Disney Silly Sing Along; Batoto Yetu; Teach Me the Blues
7/8 Grade Songs: Elisha & Joshua; Pie Jesu; Pura Vida (Enjoy Life!); We Weren't Born to Follow
I look forward to everything coming up for the end of the year! I plan to update again post Spring Concert.
